Unlike directing, designing is a very tangible act:
metaphors are made manifest; designing is the process of discovering the most useful context through which to show an audience the story that a production wishes to tell. In addition to often designing elements of the shows I direct, I also design for others. Working discretely as a designer gives me insights into the ways that these disciplines function. My ability to successfully use design as an active aspect of storytelling is part of what makes me a good director. As a scenic designer,
